Brian Ulrich - photographer

Brian Ulrich is a photographer that focuses on the consumerist lifestyle runs this country. He is interested in exploring the intricacies of our culture that is controlled by capitalism. His project, Copia, meaning “a plentiful supply,” deals with “the roles we play in self-destruction, over-consumption, and as targets of marketing and advertising,” according to his artist’s statement. I’m interested in how he uses the medium of photography to subvert the hegemonic power of capitalism that permeates every aspect of our lives. Check out his projects here. Do you think his photographs are effective? Do you think photography is an appropriate medium to explore retail, thrift, etc. consumerism?

  1. wow, this guy has some awesome photographs.

as a visual artist myself, i think that photographs, paintings, film, etc. can be excellent mediums to take an activist stance.

i love the way this guy plays with the composition and subject-matter of his photographs. consumer products seem to be lined-up, in a row, stacked, or organized in some other fashion that evokes a sense of fascist, rigid, uniformity (especially in his "Retail" and "Thrift" galleries). also, i love the photographs of some of the people shopping. they all seem to have this disaffected stare that seems to highlight the mundane-ness and repetitiveness of constantly buying things.

great link, sarah. i'm definitely bookmarking this guy's site. good stuff.
