I came across this ad when I was watching TV the other day and I was shocked. This commercial is selling Kotex which has been re branded with new packaging. The advertisement is telling the consumer all the subtleties that commercials use to get young women to buy their product. When watching the ad I felt uncomfortable because it was telling me what I was thinking, even if I did not know I was thinking it. What kind of media do you think this is? Why would this messaging useful in advertising?

this commercial definitely deconstructs a lot of the tropes and themes that exist in advertising today--especially in advertising that is targeted towards women.
ReplyDeletein my opinion, the tactics aren't subtle at all (as you suggested), but extremely obvious. i just think that we're so used to seeing formulaic advertisements over and over and over again, that we just accept what we're being sold, and consider it as normal.
it's definitely an interesting ad, but i find it kind of ironic that the Kimberly-Clark Corporation (who owns Kotex) would put out a commercial that points out all the ways in which advertisements toy with our thoughts and emotions. yet, they obviously rely heavily on this kind of advertising to sell their other products. in a lot of ways this reminds me of the whole AXE/Dove marketing campaigns carried out by Unilever.
